I was an editorial fashion and portrait photographer in NYC and London for 18 years before focusing on painting. I photographed on assignment some very interesting people, including Sinead O’Connor, Kevin Bacon, Lenny Kravitz, Kate Moss, Morgan Freeman, Captain Beefheart, and other actors, artists, and musicians. Some amazing but not famous ones, too. It was mostly very fun, sometimes hilarious, sometimes difficult. My work was featured in Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine, Vogue, British Elle, The London Sunday Times Magazine, Bomb, and many album covers. I was a rare woman in a very male-dominated and intense world smack down in crazy, grim, and fascinating NYC. Before the mall stores took over. I wanted to capture female attitude in the form of a beguiling or weird narrative, but often I was assigned boys to photograph because I was the rare “girl” photographer (Lenny Kravitz and Moby were my favorites). All this eventually mushed up, mixing, evolving and expanding into my work as a painter today. Paula Bullwinkel Photography 1979-2016 (link to preview) is a book of my photographs (available on Amazon).
