Everything As Though It Had Nothing, 20 x 20 inches, oil on canvas, 2022, a black cat on a diamond pattern where the pattern morphs throughout the body of the feline. Humans are complex; their absence emphasizes the ascendancy of the animal-protagonist, who represents spiritual goodness. Here, pattern is as prominent as the animal. The patterns that guide me are from textiles my mother sewed her clothes and my clothes. Pattern becomes a way to bond.

Everything As Though It Had Nothing, 20 x 20 inches, oil on canvas, 2022. Humans are complex; their absence emphasizes the ascendancy of the animal-protagonist, the essence of spiritual goodness. Here, pattern is as prominent as the animal. The patterns that guide me are from textiles my mother used to sew her clothes and my clothes as a child. Pattern becomes a way to bond. The animal is inspired by artwork I made in Lisbon in a month-long artist residency last fall. I focused on animals found in traditional Portuguese art (blue and white tiles, puppets, ceramics) and made my own versions.
