In my new work, the women and girls are in motion; they are strong and beautiful. But sometimes the women give off a sense of a lack of belonging. They lack groundedness and ease. The women must move ahead because of possible or imminent danger. In our culture, and in the larger world, women and girls are threatened with violence in a number of disturbing ways. In the artworks, guns and monsters symbolize the violence. The heroines’ power to think and move quickly helps them survive, and even flourish.
